Southeast Response & Remediation, Inc.

Corporate History

In 1957, Thomas E. Murrell launched a family business that would not only thrive for many years -- it would also spawn two other corporations in Wilmington, North Carolina. The original company, Wilmington Shipyard, Inc., gave rise to the formation of Hanover Towing in 1970. While the independent shipyard is no longer in existence, the familiar orange and white tugs of Hanover Towing can be seen daily on the Cape Fear River as they safely escort barges along the waterfront.

In the course of using the river to aid commerce, the Murrells recognized the potential hazards that the marine trade posed to an increasingly sensitive coastal environment -- both on the land and in the water. Being natives who value the special features of their coastal home, the creation of Southeast Response & Remediation, Inc. in 1991 by Cathy and Bill Murrell was a natural development.  SR&R is a woman owned and operated business with Cathy G. Murrell President and Chief Executive Officer.
